MacOS Monterey is packed with new features. It’s an exciting update for the Mac, but caution is advised. After backing up is complete, a public beta access utility can be downloaded that will help with the macOS Monterey update. Recovering from an installation failure with a mobile device is much easier than with a Mac computer. Clicking the macOS tab will show some additional information about the beta program and a bit further down the page there will be an option to ‘ enroll your Mac.’ Apple recommends making a backup of the Mac before installing the beta version of macOS and this is an important step. It’s easy to sign up through Apple’s beta software page using an Apple ID. What’s New & How To Get MacOS Montereyīefore installing the macOS Monterey beta update, the user must be a member of the beta program. For those eager to get the new features, a free Apple beta membership is required. The official release of macOS Monterey will come in the fall, just a few months from now. Anyone that relies upon their Mac for critical uses or daily work should exercise patience. This means a public beta is generally stable, but may have some unforeseen problems. Since developers have the first access, they can give detailed feedback to Apple to assist with squashing bugs that may have slipped through. This beta version comes after the developer beta release, which has a subscription fee and targets app developers that need to test Mac apps with the new system software. The Apple beta software program allows early adopters to try out pre-release versions of the Mac operating system. The latest hardware enables more software features and that is what is seen in the wealth of new capabilities that are coming in macOS Monterey. The 13-inch MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini launched at the end of 2020 and a new iMac expanded the M1 transition to a second Apple desktop in April of 2021. Several computers have been transitioned away from Intel processors to Apple’s own surprisingly powerful M1 chip, based on the same ARM architecture as iPad and iPhone. This is the kind of feature that could break either way for folks - it either means getting more organized or just creating a whole bunch of new groups of infinite tabs.Apple’s Mac computers have enjoyed a whirlwind of activity with the release of the first Apple Silicon devices. If you know anything about how Apple makes software, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that those groups get synced across devices via your Safari account. There’s more control of of the tabs, as well, in the form of Tab Groups, which allow you to essentially bookmark a bunch of sites together, so you can group them into things like Home and Work (assuming those ever become separate things again). Your mileage will vary, of course, but the idea at the heart of it is tying the field to the individual tabs, rather than having it more of a constant presence. It might not seem like much, but after so many generations of the task bar serving as the driving force, it’s admittedly a pretty bold change at the center of the browser. There’s a pretty radical difference up front: In either case, I haven’t been using Monterey intimately enough to offer something more definitive on the Safari experience. Of course, change is also a necessary part of evolving. And certainly it’s true that people hate disruptions to their workflow - this is likely one of a handful of reasons I’ve never seriously concerned switching to Safari as a default every day browser. There was some concern following the keynote that the updates would only introduce confusion for many users. The browser gets some key updates with every major macOS refresh, but this is one of the largest in recent memory. Some initial thoughts - Let’s start with Safari.
